Pilau

The most delectable rice dish you will ever taste. A mix of sophisticated spices makes this food popular amongst Tanzanians and it's neighboring countries. Its origins are from both Indian and middle eastern. It is often cooked in Goat meat and broth, however there are various variations. Seafood pilau is common in Zanzibar and vegetable pilau can be seen on many menus.

Pilau is a staple meal during wedding celebrations and all special occasions. You will never attend a Tanzanian wedding that doesn't have pilau and chapati. In East Africa it is always served with a salad called 'kachumbari'.
