Wakanda Culture Guide
I saw Black Panther on it’s release date. I will be honest I’ve had this movie on my calendar since January of 2017 (maybe even longer). We paid for a rented theatre over a month before the movie’s premiere. WOW! This is by far the most culturally influential, technologically advanced, fashion forward, politically charged, action packed, and revolutionary work of art [PERIOD]
Black Panther poetically displays the various spectrums of African beauty and culture using an Afrofuturism approach. I can justifiably say Black Panther is “The Best” movie that I’ve ever seen. The exposition was so clear that I was able to follow along, and I do not have a strong Marvel Comics knowledge. I was mesmerized with the Oakland native's -Ryan Coogler- brilliant atypical story line, the amalgamation of African culture from all over the continent, and the Diaspora connection. Every race can enjoy and learn from this science-fiction masterpiece.
The entire time that I was reclined in my comfy theatre seat, with my #Royal African inspired garb (forgot to take a full body pic), I was secretly jumping inside with anxiousness, and was ready to write about all the cultural context on this blog. I’m totally going to have to see the movie a few more times and update this post.
If you haven’t seen the movie yet don’t worry this is a safe space. I detest spoilers and promise not to give the movie away. So here we go...
First up is one of the most powerful statements from the movie quoted by Chadwick Boseman, King of Wakanda: T'Challa aka Black Panther,
“The illusions of division threaten our very existence...more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another, as if we were one single tribe".
